Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog.
Portrait of a dog, oil on linen, 24x18. He turned out much more realistic than I intended and I need to figure out why. Below is a preliminary study on brown paper.
Un bon brave toutou de chasse... J'aime ses grandes oreilles et son regard tendre qui ne demande qu'à être aimé... Peu importe si vous avez voulu le rendre moins réaliste, je trouve que cette peinture est formidable.
Many thanks, Martine. Before I began, I saw this subject very differently so I am a little disappointed in the outcome. I just got so tight with it. I do appreciate your nice comment and agree that his long floppy ears are wonderful!
This is a fabulous painting Susan. I like the effects of the linen on the painting--rough. It's quite appropriate for a canine portrait I think. It's really quite special. The owner of this beauty is going to love it.
Hi, Linda - I like painting on a highly textured surface as I love how the weave of the support catches the paint. In my mind the support is equally as important as the paint itself and is an integral part of the whole. Thanks for your kind words.
Thanks, Stephanie - I wish I could be as free in the actual painting as I am in the study. Sometimes there is a loss of spontaneity between the two. And sometimes its better not to do a study and just jump right in. I do that often as well.
