What an interesting and challenging model we had at the Portrait Society Wednesday. He has lived in the US for over 20 years but is originally from India. He was elegant, charming and totally likable and I was so excited to paint him. His face was quite handsome with glorious skin tones and wonderful angles and shapes. He held his pose beautifully for the entire session and was a complete joy to paint. As always, I had trouble fitting him on the canvas but decided to go with the flow and am not unhappy with the result.
Profiles are tricky, you pulled these off beautifully. Nice to see you posting again Susan, your work is always full of joy.

ReplyDeleteI do need to work on fitting the model on the canvas! In my studio, when I have this problem, I usually opt for a larger canvas. But here I was constrained to the panel I had on hand. Glad you like it and many thanks for visiting, Stephanie.

ReplyDeleteI like doing profile portraits once in a while - usually I come late and that is the last position with enough room to place my easel! But they present a challenge, and for this model, I was happy for the opportunity to paint this view. Thanks, Hilda!

Many thanks, Martine, for your very kind words. I often find myself wondering about the models as I paint them. Many times, as I paint, I may even create a fantasy life that fits my image of them. I think this helps free up my brush work and make my painting choices more intuitive and less intellectual. I prefer that mode of painting if I can achieve it. Serj was a great model and a very mysterious man!
