Life Demands a Profile

This has been a very difficult few days for me in my personal life and, although I forced myself to go to the portrait session on Wednesday morning, my heart was not in it. My first two sketches were so forced that they failed miserably - one I erased entirely and the other I felt like tearing into tiny pieces after struggling with it for a long and frustrating time. Finally, I moved to the corner of the studio and quietly composed myself enough to do a quick profile. This one I am happy with as there is a good likeness and perhaps a little more.

  1. Genuinely sorry things have been difficult. Glad you found the solution by going to the corner. I can remember when we went to the corner to be punished! Good to know this time was a healing experience.
What you did is a beauty and I love the hair.

    1. I had not thought about being banished to the corner, Julie, and your comment made me laugh! Perhaps our parents were smarter than we knew as going to the corner did work to allow me to pull myself together and I ended up with a drawing I am pleased with!

    1. Thank you so much, Hilda. This sketch pleases me as I see some of the model's personality in this profile view with her perfect, erect posture, the set of her lips and her beautiful (red) Chinese jacket.

  4. It's so true that emotions spill from the brush - that's why when you buy a painting, you are buying a little of the Artists soul too... Only you are aware of any problems with this though Susan! Nobody else can see what is wrong with it - It's lovely!! I really hope things get better for you soon xxx

    1. I could not agree more, Sandra. As Vincent Van Gogh said, "Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter's soul." And I have no doubt this sentiment applies to works on paper as well.

  7. It's good to be back, Susan, and I can see I have missed so much - even your blog is revamped! I love the 'quick profile' and am sorry to hear that life is not running as smoothly as you would wish it to. Hope it works all out ... my life seems to be calming down, but I'm not holding my breath!

    1. Welcome back, John - I am glad things have settled down for you - I have certainly missed you and your thoughtful blog entries as well as your art work. One thing I have learned is that life will be unpredictable no matter how hard we work to keep the sailing smooth. One day at a time philosophy works when the going is rough.
