Finally, finally, finally a painting turned out something like I had in mind before I started. I have had such a tendency to tighten up lately when painting in oil. I was beginning to fear that my Wednesday portrait sessions, where I am trying to draw what I see so I can capture a likeness and an expression, were beginning to affect my painting. Thank goodness this piece has looser brushwork and a more abstract quality.

Hold the Thought Delicately in the Mind

As I write, Bruno is out back, bellowing for his bedtime snack. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this painting - the looseness and abstraction, and that left hind as the focus. Now ... what thought is he so delicately holding holding, along with his hoofie???
Ah! If only I knew what the thought was! Perhaps he is thinking of how he pushes off with those rear legs as he charges out of the starting gate. Or how he has to tuck those legs up high and tight when jumping. Or maybe he is thinking of the farrier coming by to shoe him. He is an enigma to me!
DeleteI know just how you must feel. Banish fear! You have prevailed. Lovely in all aspects.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Suzanne! Its all about being bold and banishing the fear - a constant struggle!
DeleteAnd so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Judy - I am not unhappy with him! :)
DeleteThis horse is no kidding, beware.
ReplyDeleteI like this looseness very much, I like your precise portraits so very much, too. Life is pumping in them, full of energy.
My portraits seem to be getting tighter and more precise as I struggle to sty loose with my painting. Interesting...... Thank you for your kind words, Irina.
DeleteI love this horse. Full of action. Yes - your portraits are more precise but not overly so. Your line varies beautifully and you are masterful in your awareness of what to leave out.
ReplyDeleteSuch kind words! I value them highly coming from such a gifted artist as yourself.
DeleteSusan!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that you were able to connect what was on your mind and what wound up on the canvas! Good for you Susan!
I often wonder if there is also a subconscious mind that is also at work while we artists do our thing!
Keep on keeping on and making wonderful art ! Bravo to you Susan!

Thank you for your comment, Michael. I am sure there is so much of the interior workings of the mind of the artist that end up as paint strokes on the canvas. Sometimes when I am painting, I lose track of my surroundings, my sense of time and space and even my sense of self - something is going on there for sure!
