A Singers Life and a Pathetic Oil Attempt

Jakki Ford / Conte pastel on tan toned paper / 14x11
Jakki is a local entertainer who has the voice of an angel and played some of her own CDs as background music while we drew her. She wore a large yellow feathered piece in her hair and was a very elegant and personable lady.

Amber / 18x14 / oil on gray toned linen panel
Last Sunday was Art Mash at the NV Museum of Art. Amber was the lovely model. She wore a navy blue gold spangled outfit and was seated on a lime green settee among a profusion of brilliant colored pillows and throws. I did my best but could not capture her beauty or the relaxation of her pose. I do feel I was successful with the foreshortening of the figure so all was not lost. She was a most lovely model but I am still finding life painting to be so nerve wracking. I look forward to the day when I succeed in conquering these jitters!

  1. My kiddos for managing to get the hot pink to stay behind the cool blues. I love the far arm peeping thru the fabric in such a relaxed way.
The drawing is - as always - excellent

    1. Thanks, Julie - figure painting from life is a real challenge. I tried to paint what I saw but am afraid I was too literal in this piece making it not very interesting. Hopefully, I will become more bold as I become more experienced at it.

    1. Thank you, Jane. I agree about Jakki - she seemed to be from another time. As for the painting of Amber - I think I did not solidify in my mind what I needed to accomplish before I jumped in - I will blame it on my nerves!

    1. Yes - they are different. The drawing wss done in about 30 minutes with a new Conte pencil which I like very much. The painting took about 3 hours and I found it hard to be bold that day.

  6. LOVE Jakki's portrait! Did she sing en francais??? Once again, your work beautifully and happily reminds me of 19th c. French Impressionism.

    1. It would have been fun if she sang in French but she did songs from the big band era (my father would have loved her!) and some Beatles like Fool on the Hill! Her voice is very rich and lilting!

    1. LOL - Thank you, Linda. I do need to set high standards for myself. I am still getting used to the time pressure and the difference between painting in seclusion in a studio and painting in public with other very accomplished artists. Of course, I have been to many workshops but these sessions are uninstructed. Its all just a bit different and needs some getting used to , I guess.

  8. Good morning Susan! I am so happy you went to the NV Art Museum! So nice to be around art! I am also happy you had a chance to paint while there! Sounds like a great day! I am sorry about the "jitters!" I think this painting came out wonderful. But, you, the artist see things that others will never ever see. Also you probably had some other result planned. You certainly are so very talented. When I get the "jitters" I try to just keep putting paint on the canvas. Relax a bit and have some fun! I also hate frustration! Maybe it is part of a process. I know one thing for sure...Keep on painting! You make great art!
Take care my oh so very talented art buddy!

    1. Exactly,Michael - I just need to keep painting and eventually these jitters will abate. The session was cancelled today due to Super Bowl Sunday! Oh, well - there will be another session 2 Sundays from now!

  9. take care my friend, you're looking through that dark glass again!! i know exactly how you feel and what you see but they are only thoughts and thoughts can be changed! i look at the painting and i see beautiful brushwork and the superior skills of the artist i admire so much. we can talk ourselves into seeing something that's not there. ignore the voice. it can't paint. it can only criticize!

    1. Oh, my gosh, Suzanne - I hope not. Even though I am so nervous at these life sessions, I eagerly go to them hoping to improve and force my art to a new level! One can always hope! But I do agree that a negative voice creeps in now and again and - yes! I need to totally ignore it! Thank you so much for your thoughts and concerns. You are a true friend and I am lucky to have you!
