This little painting was inspired by the hounds of Chateau Cheverny in France - hunting hounds that are a cross between English and American Foxhounds. They are incredibly beautiful animals!
Hounds / oil on canvas panel / 12 x 12 |
And some doodling on newsprint - perhaps this fellow will show up in a painting some day.
Sketch of a jockey astride his mount / graphite on newsprint |
And an experiment using pink drawing paper toned with burnt umber essence (highly thinned oil paint). I just love this grouping of horses and riders.

Clever and intriguing composition with one hound looking away and one staring right at me. What gorgeous dogs they are. I like the painting of six backsides too!!
ReplyDeleteHope you hubby is feeling really well. If you are back to being productive like this then I take that as a good sign.
I
Six rear ends and eighteen legs! It's hard not to lose sight of all that is going on! Thanks for your kind words, Julie. Hubby is doing great!
DeleteOh my goodness, this is classic Smolensky. The hounds look so intelligent and aware that we are looking at them.
ReplyDeleteThe sketch of the jockey HAS to appear in the future, he has a rather regal demeanour.
There is so much movement in 'racing' that there is a danger that they will be out of sight before we get a proper look at 'em!
Wonderful post, Susan. Hope everything is now settled down to a happy normality.
Happy normality - that sounds about right! We are very glad, relived and grateful that the husband has recovered so well. Now we have to cope with a flooded basement as heavy winter snows have melted quickly with the arrival of warm and Springlike weather!. Its feast or famine - for the last 5 or 6 years we have had very little precipitation and were in an actual drought! Now we have had a historical winter with more snow than has been seen in 22 years. Well, you know what they say - if its notone thing, its another!
DeleteSuch a dignified pose the hound on the right displays! Just beautiful animals! Love your sketch and hope it will appear again.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, carol. I paint so many horses and jockeys that I wanted to get a feel for how the jockey sits on his mount - relaxed and at ease in this particular case!
DeleteI absolutely love the brush work on these hounds Susan! Beautifully painted!!! The three racing horses are amazing...beautiful movement. The sketch of the jockey on the horse is a favorite.......LOVE him...very elegant ...
ReplyDeleteYour enthusiasm is so wonderful, Hilda - you are so encouraging!
DeleteDAMME, Susan, I may have to take up oils :) Your paintings are so incredibly beautiful and ALIVE!!! I have taken a peek at your website, and have had my socks blown off! I'll answer your email later this evening ...
ReplyDeleteKathryn
I LOVE oils - ever since I was a child, I knew they were the medium for me. Thank you for taking a gander at my website. I do try to keep it up to date!
DeleteThe beauty of these dogs has been perfectly captured by your incredibly skilled hand , they are so alive and alert . I'm sure we are going to see a wonderful painting of the jockey on the horse, it's such a typical Susan scene :-)
ReplyDeleteI just may put him on canvas - or he may appear sitting astride a horse in one of my equine scenes!
DeleteI'll bet they are very noisy dogs too! What fantastic paintings! And that sketch has a real 'old master' feel to it. Brilliant! :0)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Sandra - I have included that little grouping of horses dashing away in a larger painting but some day they may merit their own canvas!
Deleteawesome paintings!
ReplyDeleteNice to see you here, Ashok - I am so glad you stopped by!
DeleteHi my friend. I have sent a comment for this one before. But I don't know what has happened to it. But here goes again. Lovely paintings but I do love the hounds. They are brilliant. All the best Susan.
ReplyDeleteVic.
Hi, Vic - I am still checking your site once in a while and hoping you return to painting. Thank you so much for your kind words!
DeleteHey Susan, de honden zien er prachtig uit, en er zit ook veel beweging in je groep paarden....
ReplyDeletegroetjes van Simonne
Thank you, Simmone - I do enjoy painting things (animals, people) in motion!
DeleteHope you're doing great Susan!!! Lovely work as usual.
ReplyDeleteHi, Gina - and thank you for stopping by! Hope all is well with you and your beautiful family.
DeleteOh I seem to have missed this post. Beautiful hounds! And glad to read you and your husband are doing ok. Well except for the flooded basement, I had some flooding to deal with in my bedroom recently, but ok now.
