I am working on titles for a group of paintings that I am still working on. Titles are very important to me and I would like to have the titles reflect my ideas and thoughts about this project, giving it a sense of cohesion. Hopefully, I will get a chance to give this some thought in the coming weeks.

These paintings have awesome energy. The way you draw the joints and speckle the ground puts the subjects in motion and imparts a high. Very electrifying.
ReplyDeleteTitles have always confounded me, but I like them for the same reasons you do. I think a title probably should answer why of the painting, but who can put their finger on that?
Hi, Linda - sorry for the late reply to this blog post but I have been so busy. Life as a whirlwind is good though - it keeps me out of trouble! I still have not gotten around to considering the titles. That is next on my list of things to do!

ReplyDeleteTitles...I am not too creative with those...eg. a recent one was - Snow, Water and Crows - but Carol Marine is the BEST at being creative with them.
I actually love the challenge of wracking my brain for interesting, provocative and appropriate titles. Of course, at times they are interesting and provocative only to me!

ReplyDeleteDylan Thomas, the Welsh poet, always ranted against titles saying that the poem should speak for itself without trying to précis it with a title. Perhaps it's the same with paintings ... although even he gave way to the need to add a title.

DeleteI try for enigmatic ttles (sometimes I think they appeal only to me) as I don't want to give the viewer any preconceived notions about the painting. So I guess I do agree to some degree with Dylan Thomas . And YES - Sandra is magic! I adore her work and her generous spirit!

DeleteI had a black and white springer spaniel I named "Sport." He was my first dog when I was five. He ran about 30 mph to catch seagulls. I fed him a large bowl of food each day, but it was not enough. At six, my widowed mother remarried. About a year later we moved from the country and the dog had to stay on my aunt's farm. He was not feral, but he was more wild than a pet. He was a hunting dog. If that were my portrait, the name would be "Sport."
