Ballerina #33

Ballerina #33 / oil on canvas panel / 30 x15

Ballerina #33 in all her glory. This is the largest figurative piece I have done yet at 30 by 15 inches. I have done larger equine paintings but this is my first human of this size. And all that flesh was daunting! I have a new found respect for Lucien Freud since painting her. Small photos of larger paintings tend to diminish showing the vigor of brushwork and texture of the paint so I decided to add a few close ups for your scrutiny.

Study for Ballerina #33 / oil on paper / 25 x 15

And a quick study on brown paper done as a warm up before attempting her.

  8. Fantastic! I do love your full bodied ballerinas. The humor of the subject tickles me. The draftsmanship is amazing and your color is superb. I am so glad to see you did a study. Would you believe I have never heard of Lucien Freud before and have no idea who he is --other than perhaps he's Sigmund's brother--but I do know who you are and that you stand well above the crowd as a painter. This is an Outstanding and very memorable nude.

    1. Thank you for the kind words, Linda. I long to make my mark in the art world and am relentless in this pursuit - your positive reinforcement gives me hope! Many thanks. It's funny that I did that little study - I hardly ever do that but, as you can see, I exaggerated the pose in the painting and I like it much better. It has a fluidity and balance that are missing in the study. Lucian Freud, Sigmund's grandson, did some amazing ( and very large) nude figurative work. Some of it is almost repulsive in its honesty but he was certainly a fearless painter of the human figure.
