2014 Begins with Ballerina #31

Ballerina #31 / oil on canvas panel
So happy to spend the day in my studio today with Ballerina #31 and Sir Colin Davis. I didn't get a chance to listen to the Messiah around the holidays last year so today I played the entire recording by the London Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Sir Colin Davis in 2006. I still think it is the best recording of Handel's Messiah that I have ever heard. I am mesmerized by it and entirely swept away. What a wonderful day it was!

  1. I love the colors you've chosen for this painting. It sounds like your day was perfect. Music and art…it doesn't get better than that!

    1. I had fun with the colors in this - something a bit different. Yes, music and painting almost invariably go together for me!

  2. Yippee! Yippee! Wow! So much fun! You are one rocking artist Susan! Keep on painting furiously with out abandonment! (Once I won a silent auction and got to be the conductor and lead the orchestra and chorus in the Hallelujah Chorus! So glad you listened to the Messiah and painted!) I love this one. I love them all!
    Keep it up!!!!

    1. OMG, Michael, you conducted the orchestra and choir for the Hallelujah Chorus! That must have been a dream come true! I can't even imagine such a wondrous event! Wow - I am so happy for you!
Hope you are loving all that snow and cold weather! :)

  3. This is a very fun painting, Susan, and makes me think fondly of one of my teachers. Unlike my earlier tiny teacher, she presented a rather large comical figure in ballet attire. However, her understanding and presentation of the physics of dance was enlightening.

    1. Ah, Diana, her attitude says it all. My ballerinas may look comical now and then but they are are quite serious about the dance!

  4. Susan, I am so happy to read you had a fantastic day in the studio. The first thing i noticed about your ballerina was that she was singing, and then it struck me how much she reminded me of Mahalia Jackson. Hmmmm ... I think The Messiah had a wonderful, serendipitous effect on your painting today.
I have never listened to The Messiah [probably because I avoid all things Christmas-y] but I do love Mozart's Requiem. I must give that version of Messiah a listen. :)

    1. Hi, Kathryn - I sheepishly admit to having to Google Mahalia Jackson. But now that I know her, I can see the connection! I love Mozart's Requiem as well - classical music is what I always come back to.
