A Day Spent with Pencil in Hand

Three Horses / graphite on white sketching paper / approx 24x36

Trying to find a good composition for a possible painting I have in mind.. This is done on two pieces of 18x24 paper pushed together and is quite rough. You can see all the erasure marks and smudges all about the paper. But I am getting a feeling for where I want to go with this.

  4. You must have an amazing knowledge of horses to get all this perspective and anatomy looking so good. What exciting sketches. I look forward to seeing the final piece.

  5. Sorry to have kept missing your posts, Susan. I can see that I have missed some really exciting stuff.

The angles/foreshortening and imagination with which you visualize such equine contortions and emotions, is little short of genius. I know something really 'big' will come out of these early works. I wait on the edge of my seat!

    1. I hope so, John but I am nervous. My best paintings seem to be those that are more spontaneous and lack this amount of aforethought and preparation. I am still not sure what I will do but, in the meantime, these oil and pencil studies are quite fun!

    1. I am trying to plan a multi-figure (equine) painting and hope I can bring it to reality. I am not sure and am still experimenting. Thank you for your confidence in me!

    1. I love horse anatomy and am fascinated by it. It's interesting to me how drawing the human figure and the portrait give me confidence in attempting these anatomical contortions!
